Animal Husbandry in Papum-Pare District

Distribution of circle-wise livestock population in Papum-Pare district:

Irrespective of agro-ecological situations majority of the livestock species are present in all the circles excepting buffalo (found only in 3 circles viz. Doimukh, Tarasso and Itanagar) and sheep (found only in 2 circles viz. Naharlagun and Itanagar) in varied density. Fig. 4.2 and Table 4.4, indicates that the distribution of livestock in the high hills of Mangio circle (1250 Ha above msl) is very thin. This may be contributed to the very difficult terrain, poor road communications and high mountains in the circle. Cattle population is mostly concentrated in the Doiumkh, Balijan and Naharlagun circle. These are the foot hills or low hills circles and the environment is conducive for cattle rearing. Moreover, the farmers in this circles practice settled paddy cultivation intensively and bullocks are used in ploughing operations. Mithun population is found to be highest in Sagalee circle (3,130 nos.) followed by Doimukh circle (2,429 nos.) while the Kimin circle posses the lowest mithun (177 nos.) population. The pig population is found to be highest in Doiumukh circle (3,053 nos.) and excepting Mangio and Tarasso circle (66 and 232 nos. respectively) rest of the circle posses almost uniform pig population. Goat population is found to be highest in Doiumkh circle (4,714 nos.) and excepting Mangio circle (96 nos. only) rest circle have moderately uniform distribution ranging from 360 to 3,011 nos. On an average it was found that Doimukh circle which is a foot hill area with long stretches of plain land and are in the proximity of capital city possess highest number of livestock population (15,395 nos.) followed by Balijan (9,632 nos.), Itanagar (9,259 nos.), Sagalee (8,506 nos.), Naharlagun (6,783 nos.), Kimin (5,672 nos.) and Tarasso (4,149 nos.) circles.  Toru and Leporiang circles have almost equal livestock population (2,954 and 2,235 nos. respectively). The high hill, Mangio circle has the least livestock population (521 nos. only) amongst the circles of Papum-Pare district.
