Animal Husbandry in Papum-Pare District
Total production of milk, meat and egg in Papum-Pare district
Reviewing the above discussions it is noticed that livestock and poultry shows sub-optimum production with lower productivity; this contributes to the far below per capita availability of the livestock produces as compared to the ICMR recommendations; this might be due to low genetic potential, disorganized utilization of available resources, primitive nature of livestock rearing practices and lack of awareness amongst the people about scientific advancements and the potentialities of livestock species as a means of primary source of income. This bottleneck in this sector demands the K.V.K to play pivotal role in selection of technologies, assessment and refinement of technologies and thereby dissemination of the tested scientific technologies with advanced methodology of agricultural extension for augmenting the production and productivity of the livestock and poultry population in the state. 1 Livestock production in Papum-Pare district Besides
being the capital district of the state livestock plays the major
role in the livelihood of the native people of the district
irrespective of the place of inhabitation (urban or rural). The
populations of the district are 100 per cent non-vegetarian and
animal proteins are the major source of food. The district has
65,139 numbers of livestock and 84,451 numbers of poultry

which accounts for 5.30 and 6.54 percent of the state in total. The
livestock and poultry density in the district are 22.66 and 29.37
per sq. km respectively (Livestock Census, 2003). The population of
