Horticulture in Papum-Pare Agro-Climatic Condition of Papumpare Due to varied topography, the district experiences all kinds of agro climatic conditions ranging from mild sub tropical to temperate.
The sub- temperate to temperate zone (mid and high hills) includes Mengio, Leporiang, Sagalee and Toru circle. These areas have high rainfall and moderate temperature. Itanagar, Naharlagun, Banderdewa, Doimukh, Kimin and Balijan falls under subtropical climatic zone (foot hills) of the district. These areas have high rainfall and are highly prone to soil erosion and flood. The farmers of these regions follow the traditional shifting cultivation which is one of the most prominent farming systems in Arunachal Pradesh. In most of the region this shifting cultivation is converted into horticultural plantation for sustainable agriculture. Fruit crops like orange and pineapple are grown in terrace cultivation which is a practice of hill regions that not only prevents soil erosion but also conserve water for crop cultivation. The major potential crops of the temperate zones are plum, peach, pear, large cardamom and walnut except Sagalee block where orange is the major potential crop. In the subtropical zone (Itanagar, Naharlagun, Doimukh, Kimin and Balijan) the major crops are pineapple, banana, orange, ginger, litchi, black pepper along with flowers like Gerbera, Anthurium, Geranium, chrysanthemum and sub-tropical orchids like Dendrobium, cymbidium and medicinal plants like Coptis Teeta, Brahmi, Patchouli etc. |
